Role Summary:

Reporting to a Project Leader, Chemistry, the Senior Scientist, Chemistry is responsible for the development and evaluation of novel targeted approaches to the treatment of liver disease or other indications relevant to Arbutus’ ongoing research projects. The Senior Scientist will use professional concepts and the company's capabilities to solve a wide range of difficult problems in imaginative and practical ways.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver on research goals and objectives.

  • Investigate a therapeutic research area to implement and complete research projects.

  • Apply expert knowledge to proposed research projects, exploratory and formal research programs.

  • Act as a point person for interdisciplinary resource communication in collaboration with the research team and line management.

  • Propose and conduct experiments, critically evaluate data drawing appropriate conclusions and develop a forward plan of action. Review and evaluate project progress with supervisor to meet timelines.

  • Serve as a key contributor on the research team in area of expertise as a project chemist. Provide data reports and progress reports to line management.

  • Assist in the effective utilization of external collaborating parties and/or contract research laboratories performing studies on behalf of the company.

  • Maintain knowledge of published intellectual property and research developments in research field; recommend alternative approaches to research projects and programs.

  • Maintain knowledge of "state of the art" technologies that can advance drug discovery.

  • Foster a spirit of cooperation, teamwork and motivation within the laboratory and department.

  • Present scientific results in a variety of settings, both formal and informal, and both within and, as opportunity allows, outside of the company.

  • Contribute to the development of Arbutus' patent portfolio and the scientific literature.

  • Implement innovative solutions to the problems at hand.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry and minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, which may include postdoctoral experience with a proven record of accomplishment in the field. Experience in nucleoside chemistry preferred.

  • Experience working in a biopharmaceutical environment, synthesizing and designing target molecules, working independently with minimal supervision.

  • Strong work ethic and working knowledge of drug discovery with a focus on generating laboratory results.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills; proven ability to effectively present to a variety of internal and external audiences.

  • Mature with a proven ability to collaborate with and influence others at all levels throughout a diverse organization.

  • Ability to manage deadlines and prioritize effectively, while maintaining flexibility and able to achieve team/extended team buy-in.

  • Demonstrates scientific creativity, works independently, and takes initiative.
